![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jason Koxvold started racing with the SACU in April 1999 on a stock '93 Honda RS125. The first season was the usual mix of good and bad results, a steep mechanical learning curve (assisted by Derek and Lisa Ross of Team Miller Racing, among others, to whom a debt of thanks is owed) and a lot of Scottish rain. In his first race he placed first in the Novice class (third overall) against twelve or so other riders, under torrential rain on regular Dunlop medium compound intermediates - within two hours of lowsiding on cold tyres in practice. Subsequent finishes included a second place at Cadwell Park in England at a Derby Phoenix club race against local riders and other outsiders and several off-podium results, as well as the occasional mechanical DNF. During two months spent in California in the summer of '99, Jason arranged reciprocity membership with the AFM and spent a weekend at Sears Point, a dangerous technical track near San Francisco, racing on a borrowed '91 Honda RS125 against 39 other bikes. He placed 35th and came away intact, save for a sunburnt neck and some trackside hotdog-related issues. Determined to make a better start the next time round, a month later he returned without the benefit of any further practice and, from a midpack grid position, shot past six bikes in the first two corners until an electrical failure brought him back into the pits before even finishing a lap. Back in Scotland, a similar problem prevented him from finishing the last race of the season. The bike is now sitting in the house looking anxious to get back out on the track for next season. |
